Start Peninsula hosted its third Micro Pitch event on Wednesday, September 17, spotlighting ten local startups bringing bold ideas to life. The competition gave founders the chance to pitch their businesses for exposure, mentorship, and funding support. Three judges evaluated the presentations:
Each of the ten finalists delivered their vision for the future, and in the end, three companies emerged as winners, each earning $500 and advancing to the November finals for a shot at the $5,000 grand prize.
The Winners
Cargoyle
A “cargo gargoyle,” Cargoyle creates locking hasps to secure shipping containers and railroad boxcars. Their simple yet powerful solution addresses the critical need for shipping security in a global trade environment.
Loyalty Technologies
Loyalty Technologies is an advanced materials R&D company turning agricultural waste into high-value carbon nanomaterials. Their platform produces conductive carbons and graphene-like materials for energy storage, water purification, sensors, and advanced composites. By bridging sustainability and performance, Loyalty Technologies is creating scalable solutions that replace mined graphite with cost-competitive, eco-friendly alternatives.
Southern Belle Fungus
Southern Belle Fungus is all about mushrooms—selling, growing, and educating the community on their benefits. From teaching how to identify mushrooms in the wild to sharing their nutritional and medicinal properties, the business blends commerce with community learning.
Founder Tia Henderson reflected on her experience:
“I came in nervous, but I left proud. The nerves reminded me how much this matters and once I started, I knew I was right where I needed to be!!”

Celebrating the Entrepreneurial Journey
Judge Amber Hamilton reflected on the evening:
“Standing in front of strangers with just a few minutes to communicate the purpose and impact your company can make should be an Olympic sport. Pitching is incredibly hard to do really well and requires an admirable level of courage & clarity. Well done to each of the founders who pitched this evening! I continue to be amazed at the innovation here in Hampton Roads and am proud to be part of such an incredible community.”
